Welcome to summer! Here in Utah the last of the schools have ended for the year and now it’s time to party!
I know I picked a profession that most people reluctantly need. I also know that when someone asks what fun things they’re doing for summer this year – family photos aren’t on that list. But let me tell you a little secret; summer family photos are the best photos to take. Let me tell you why.
First off, let me preface this by saying fall is my busy season. My shoots are 90% family photos. And with good reason too, the leaves are changing and there is color everywhere! Christmas cards are on the horizon and moms start planning what pictures will go on the cards. There’s also more routine now that kids are back in school and it’s easier to get a handle on your schedule. All valid points – and if you still love fall photos, I will gladly see you in October! But if you haven’t taken photos in awhile or want to change it up, this post is for you.
The number one reason why I love (and take my own) family photos in the summer is the green! Although it has been twelve (ah!) years since I’ve lived in Oregon, that is still a big part of me and my identity and being surrounded by green feels so fresh and clean and full of life. If you scroll my Instagram feed, regardless of the season, there is always green in my photos. I can’t help it. Since I shoot most often in the canyons, they take a little bit to warm up, so summer proves the perfect time for green canyons!
Second, temperature. If you’ve ever had to take pictures on a cold day with little kids, you know that I could’ve ended this point with “temperature,” and called it good. Summer nights are some of the most wonderful things. The day is cooling down, the light is golden, and not a cold, runny nose in sight! Summer evening temperatures are perfect for families with young kids. They feel good and it’s one less thing to have to worry about during the session.
Third, with summer here, our timeframes have changed. We don’t have to worry about school the next day, so weekdays open up and we have a lot more flexibility. Which is ideal when the sun doesn’t set until 8:30/9 o’clock and our sessions start about 7:30.
Finally, with all the fun and activities planned for the summer, odds are you and your family look a little sun kissed. I’m Irish and Welsh. aka as white as you can get. I’m sure my “tan” is other people’s baseline. But with a little bit of sun, I’m feelin’ it! And when you feel good it shows up in your photos. Your confidence will ooze out of the photos and you will love them. Confidence is the most attractive thing you can wear!
