Flat Lay Challenge | Whitney Beth Photography | Product Photographer
Last week I was feeling the itch to create and challenge myself. I had product photography on my mind since I had been talking to a couple of companies about their commercial photography needs. So I decided to challenge myself. I put a question box on Instagram and asked for something random to practice my flat lay product photography on.
Three of my followers took me up on it. I got these responses: sunglasses, toothpaste and toilet paper (but make it “elegant”)
With those on my mind I set about gathering my items. I had this fun pair of super summery sunglasses from Kortni Jean. A fresh tube of toothpaste and 2020’s hottest commodity, Toilet Paper.
I also had as long as nap time would give me to get everything set up and photographed. (Which isn’t long since my boys have a magic power that allows them to wake up whenever they sense I’m being productive.) for the backdrop I used green wrapping paper, my Gather knock off play mat, and a velvet dress I have in my costumes.
From there I tried to stage my product with what I thought my make believe client would be attracted to. It was especially challenging to try and make toilet paper “elegant” – but that is where my lighting set up had its’ time to shine. (Pun intended.) I just used my camera flashlight for all my artificial needs, and it worked beautifully!
So what do you think? Not bad for about an hour. Which ones your favorite? It might just be that I’m excited for winter to be done, but the sunglasses are my favorite for sure!
