90’s Family Photos Recreation | Rutherford | Whitney Beth Photography
We all fell victim to the 90’s denim family photoshoot. What seemed so classic and timeless then has marked an entire generation. Similar to the big hair and poofy sleeves of the 80’s if you will. There’s a sense of nostalgia mixed with a dash of second hand embarrassment whenever you look at your family photos from that era. But what’s better than flipping through an album of your childhood? Recreating it. The Rutherfords have the right idea and are embracing it. Taunalyn got in contact with me and we started planning the shoot. She seemed almost hesitant at first to tell me her idea – at the risk of me not wanting to photograph it. On the contrary, this shoot from planning to printing has been one of my top favorite photographic experiences. She sent me photos of the original pictures that she’d like to recreate. We also tossed around the idea of creating some “new” 90’s inspired posing for her and her adult children.
After studying the images I knew we needed: aspens, a creek, flowers, logs and a fence. I had just the place up Little Cottonwood canyon. While it didn’t have a fence, it did have a bridge that I could get a similar look to the photos. Everyone showed up donning their fresh, crisp, denim overalls and coordinating color shirt to their childhood photos. I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard at a shoot in a long time. My absolute favorite being Elliot’s photo: lovingly nicknamed, “dead baby.”
We wrapped up the shoot and a couple weeks later at the ordering appointment I helped Taunalyn figure out print sizes for the new photos to match the old ones. We also compiled all their favorites into a photo book with the cover embossed: “Family Overall.” Defiantly the capstone and perfect finishing touch to this heirloom of a photoshoot.
I had the absolute best time recreating these images! If you want to do this with your own family, I’d be over the moon! Send me an email through my “book now” tab and we can get things going!
